Powerful Then & Now photograph we took yesterday in the vicinity of Marigny, Normandy. In the late part of July 1944, a fierce battle took place in this French town located on the western part of St-Lo. Many American units fought in this sector such as the 9th and 30th Infantry Division but the vicinity of Marigny was liberated on July 27, 1944.

  1. Looks like a German AT gun lower right. Maybe 15cm?

    1. There was no German AT gun of 15cm caliber.
The 15cm caliber was used by the heavy field artillery only. It would be difficult to find a "Schwere Feldhaubitze 15cm" in a defensive position like this; unless they were surprised on the march.
This looks more like a 10.5cm Gebirgshaubitze 40 to me: the decisive factors are the muzzle brake and the "Luftvorholer" on top of the barrel.

  2. God bless all those guys - today's generations have no idea what a debt we owe to the men in this picture and those like them.
