And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Curious on his take on what we are dealing with now. Love his quote: “Never apologize, mister, it’s a sign of weakness.” …except when already weak men are running the country it’s a double whammy.
T.Q.M. - the best John Ford movie he himself ever made. It's not the fight that makes the movie. It's the 300 pounds thrown into the firebox that sets that movie apart from others.
Plus one fine hat, from The Quiet Man. This must be a St.Paddy's Day preview.
ReplyDeleteThat movie had the best "fight scene" ever in a movie. "Second Hand Lions" is the next best fight.
ReplyDeleteLee Marvin in Mexico: cigarette, Tequila, leather gloves, beer, coat, tie and hat.

Lee Marvin got all that grey hair the old-fashioned way; he earned it (by getting shot up on Saipan).

ReplyDeleteAh, it's Sean Thornton, is it?
ReplyDeleteYoung Sean Thornton. Watching that film has become a Christmas tradition in our family.
DeleteShowing on TCM over the next week. A fun movie.
ReplyDeleteIn reality Victor McLaglan would have taken the Duke's head of in that fight. He was the Atlantic Fleet's boxing champ.
ReplyDeleteWayne had been a prize fighter in his day. He certainly would have given a good account of himself in a real dukefest.

ReplyDeleteI agree John Ford at his best. Not the dukesbest but top 5
ReplyDeleteGreat movie and beautiful scenery!
ReplyDeleteNot the Duke's best? I'd be interested to know what you think is.
ReplyDeleteThis, I've read, was his favorite, and it shows his much-underappreciated range. Wonderful, wonderful movie. Endlessly quotable.
