  1. The average height of the ancient Romans was 5 feet 4 inches. These shrimps conquered the world. But Julius Caesar was over 6 feet. He stood out for sure.

  2. Interesting contrast between North and South Korea. Same people, same cultural background, but ah the difference in the last 60+ years.

    1. Even more of a contrast when Kim Jong-un kicks off his heels. Generations stunted by famine account for the DPRK-ROK contrast but it doesn't stop at height. So much malnutrition has an impact on brain development and that, taken along with the horrendous, all encompassing control of information in the North, makes any thought of unification a near nightmare scenario.

    2. Somewhere, way back when I read that height had to do with nutrition.

    3. When I was first stationed in Korea in 94, the riots were for reunification in the South. Over the years those dwindled to no riots at all for reunification. The suddenly economic woke South Koreans saw what happened to Germany when it had to absorb the East Germans and the N. Koreans are 2 orders of magnitude more useless than East Germans. Their way of life was going back to the '60s if they have to absorb people steeped in pretend to work in order to pretend to get paid. The family ties are shattered now. Nobody really wants great great uncle Kim and his family of destitute ignorant peasants screwing up their cool urban Seoul, Pusan, Chinhae, Pohang way of life.
