And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Interesting to see the repairs to the balustrade. It's damaged in the "newborn" one (1882), worse in the "prank" (1885) and repaired in the "caught" one (1888)
Very interesting study on the focal point of many old world villages, the town well.
Like Billo commenting above, I find it fascinating that the well, not the people, is his true subject, as he chronicles the life surrounding it and the changes to its nearby landscape over the course of a few years.
