  2. Is there an advantage to that space between the back tires?
    Just put wider ones on and be done with it.

    1. Built before they had wide tires for cars and trucks. The dual tires are for more traction. That is probably a truck rear axle assembly. Knew a guy who built a car for the Indy 500, that ran a truck axle for that reason. Broke an axle shaft, and launched a tire pair into the spectators, killing some of them.
