And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Nope. That's not what hit him in his head. His neck, yeah. If interested in the case, look for the book "Mortal Error". Can't recall the author. Took the guy more than twenty years to gather all the data on that shooting, and he was the only investigator that was a shooter/ballistician. Odd, that. Would seem to be an obvious specialty for the Warren Commission group to have on hand, yes? That finding was one of the things that he turned up while looking at this shooting. He also discovered that the Commission only looked at 1/4 of the evidence that was collected for them.
Good luck finding this book. Amazon doesn't show it anymore, although a lot of books on the subject turn up in their search listings for it. None of my copies have ever come back after loaning it out, sigh...
The head shot? What caliber bullet tended to break up after entering a body? Especially with the original twist rate barrels in that era? You can see this in Kennedy's brain x-rays. No, the Carcano doesn't do this at all. That Carcano slug was capable of killing elephants, and that took a slug that didn't shed parts while doing so.
6.5x52 Carcano?
ReplyDeleteYep. The Carcano's Wiki page has a photo of that exact 'six-round en bloc clip'.
DeleteExactly correct! What a wild cartridge.
Delete6.5 carcano.

I originally thought 6mm Lee-Navy, but, yeah, 6.5mm Carcano.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very nice cartridge, perfect for shooting less than 300 meters.
Very fast action, easy on the shoulder, lower recoil than .30-06. Perfect for shooting out of a building...
Too bad the Italians never got the email from the Mauser brothers about spire tipped pills.
ReplyDelete6.5 calibers are magnificent.
I hand load for that cartridge. My buddy has an old Beretta made Carcano. Hornady still makes 140 grain round nose bullets for this.
My guess is " To hell with your shoulder, ya got 2"
ReplyDeleteclassic arms has them for sale

Those bullets look long enough to be 160 gr.
ReplyDeleteThe Swedish Mauser sported those in the early 50 years of the 20th Century!
They look like Victorian era suppositories.
