In 1959, a coffee maker was an option in Volkswagen cars. Genius!

  1. I wish I'd had one in the many Bugs I've owned over the years.

  2. My '56 doesn't but it does have a gas heater sitting next to the tank up front.

  3. Yeah, well, I would have preferred a fuel gauge instead of that stupid foot operated valve for the 1 gallon reserve tank.

    1. Yup. If you didn't remember to turn the valve back up and to fill the tank completely full, you were screwed. Been there, done 'em both.

    2. That's when I formed the lifelong (so far) habit of noting the mileage, working out the estimated range and writing down the number. That's when I would stop for gas. Worked pretty well. But I did stop keeping a roll of masking tape in the glove box after trip indicators showed up.

  4. I had a 1956 Beetle when I was living in Germany in the 70's. The heater ran off of hot air from the engine compartment, iirc. The on/off valve was located between the front seats on the floor. The valve on mine was stuck open, so in summer I disconnected one end of the corrugated air feed tubes and then reconnect them as the weather cooled. I had to remember to clean out the tubes or all the dead leaves and the like would spray out of the vents and into the driver's cabin.

  5. Also, those were 6volt systems, and turning on the radio caused the lights to dim. I can't imagine trying to fire up a heating element to boot.

  6. I see a fuel gauge so it's not a '59.

  7. My Dad had a 59 he bought new and he ordered the optional fuel gauge on his. So, it was an option back then.
