  2. Had a '70 Cuda 440-6 pack, 4 speed and 4:10 rear. Took delivery the day after Thanksgiving 1969. It was quick. 5 mpg around town of Sunoco 260. It was also the biggest piece of junk I've ever owned. Constant headaches. I never beat it but parts would just break. Actually had a letter posted in Hot Rod magazine about how bad the trans was. Sure today, it's worth a ton but back when I had it I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

  3. Ah, 1981. The year they lowered the compression ratio on everything made in America and foisted "unleaded" gasoline on America. These looked cool but were an absolute joke performance wise when compared to the '70 Hemi 'Cuda. Same with all American cars throughout, not just the Cuda.

  4. That one is nice.

I was a senior in HS in 79. I had a 71 Cuda with a 440 4V, 4-speed, 4:10 posi rear, and no other options on the car. Horrible gas mileage but great in a strait line but if there were any curves it got scary quick. It took a lot of concentration to keep it within the lane at speed limit speeds. Also I had to leave a lot of room to get it stopped.

I remember a time I was running 55 mph on the perimeter highway in Jacksonville FL. I hit a bump and the back end broke free. I did a 360 where I lost 10mph but I stayed in the lane and didn't hit anybody else. I wasn't sure what happened or how I recovered it but I drove white knuckled the rest of the trip.

It was a great looking car but for the life of me I cannot understand why these cars are so desired in stock configuration. It handled like crap, bad gas mileage, and a small block Mustang or Firebird could out run it on the quarter mile and top end.

  5. A high school buddy rebuilt a ‘70 ‘Cuda in the late 80s. He had the 440 6 pack, as well and had it painted Plum Crazy Purple. He put it through a fence on a back road in Kentucky about 8 or 9 months after he got it put back together. Apparently, he replaced everything but the tie rods. Wrecking that car beyond repair, but in a relatively safe manner (I.e. he walked away from it with nothing but some bruises) probably saved his life.

  6. Why is there a potato wearing a bikini top and a diaper on the third gauge from the left on the dash? Asking for a friend.

    1. I thought they were sunglasses, going for the cool look. After all, it's not every day you see a potato with a '71 Hemi 'Cuda.
