And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

North American XB-70 Valkyrie, wings down, 1967. Amazing bird.
To Really get an idea how big this bird is, is to see the one parked outside at Wright-Patterson AFB., in Dayton, Ohio. it makes everything else seem, well, teeny-tiny.
Too bad the fuel was toxic as hell, and the exhaust wasn't great, either. But it was a hellaciously beautiful bird. Sometimes called Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent.
Saw the last flight and landing into Wright-Patt when I was in fifth grade. It was parked outside the USAF Museums (old & "new") for a long time. They finally got around to putting it indoors quite a few years ago. Awesome bird and museum. If you can go...do. RebPirate

ReplyDeleteIt looks like it is going Mach 2 just sitting on the ground.
DeleteToo bad "pilot error" ended what could have been the finest SST in the world.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most beautiful aircraft ever.
ReplyDeleteAnd an aeronautical wonder.

ReplyDeleteThe 50's and 60's were the golden age of aviation when some amazing things were accomplished.
