Sacramento County Says It's Illegal to Work on Your Own Car in Your Own Garage

Well, not quite, but not too far off either.

This law seems vague enough that it will allow the bureaucrats to hassle you about this if they feel like it, and/or allow a jackass neighbor to report you and make trouble.

Realistically, it's aimed at people who want to run a business repairing cars in their driveway, so there's some legitimacy at least to the impetus to define things as they have, but still, it would be simpler and fairer just to make a case by case call on people abusing their homes for this kind of business and/or making their property an eyesore.

In other words, there must be zoning laws whose enforcement would solve the problem, rather than trying to strictly and in infinite detail define what's acceptable home auto repair, and what's not.

It's a law they'll enforce if there's a compliant, or if you make yourself come to their attention somehow, but otherwise not.

Another example of how too much government and too many laws make everyone a criminal sooner or later.

  1. In a land of a million laws, everyone is a criminal (or at least can be harassed by the law if you make life difficult for ‘those in charge’).

  2. Fortunately, it's California - in which case your vehicle can identify as a handicapped lesbian Native American being healed by the grease-covered shaman in a tribal ceremony.
