And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The train passed within a couple of miles of my home yesterday. Sitting in my office, I could hear the rumble of the engines and the whistle at each of the many crossings as it passed by. I met him once, at an anniversary celebration in Houston. Like all men, GHW Bush wasn't perfect, but he was a courtly and honorable man who defended his country and loved his family. He deserves to be paid our respects as a man who put his young, as-yet-unlived life on the line defending his country, and then by continuing to serve it over the decades. Not as many would make that offer today.
