Passengers were evacuated with inflatable ladders seven minutes after landing the aircraft.
Fortunately, there was an airport they could immediately return to. That engine was about to burn itself off the wing, and probably take the wing with it. Yowza!
2 engine plane. Losing one is real bad. Real, real bad.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention that whole burning engine setting wing on fire thingy.
Maybe they should design a " engine jettison" mechanism for cases like this. Then again I guess the people on the ground might be a might ticked-off being woken by a 1,000 pound flaming object coming through the roof at 3 AM.
ReplyDeletePlus losing all that weight on one side...especially when moving slow.
DeleteTends to make the plane turn on it's side....
Why didn't they cut off the fuel immediately?
ReplyDeleteOn airplanes when the FIRE light comes on, pushing the switch closes the firewall shut-off valves for that engine. The fuel line to the engine is shut off as is the hydraulic fluid to the pump to starve the fire of fuel. The switch also arms the fire bottle squibs.
DeleteEach airplane differs but the usual procedure is to allow 15 seconds to pass to allow the shut-off valves to close and see if the fire will consume all the fuel and go out. Then the #1 fire bottle switch is pressed to discharge the #1 extinguisher. You wait another 15-30 seconds to discharge the #2 extinguisher.
I'm not sure what went wrong in this incident. Perhaps the oil tank was compromised. It should be an interesting report to read.

Evacuated 7 minutes after landing? With the plane on fire I'll bet that was a long 7 minutes..
ReplyDeleteTupelov. Russian air fleet. Maybe that's the problem explained. Back in the 90's when I was working in the FSU, there was no assigned seating - and you had to check your seat before you accepted it and sat down. The ones that had seat belts usually had them because it was the only thing holding the seat in place. Better to be in one with actual bolts.
ReplyDeleteMost of the fire and video is when the plane is on the ground. At around the 22 second mark the foam is being applied.
ReplyDeleteThis 7 minutes might be from touchdown to stop and then when all are off the plane.
But I would like to see more video than what a passenger shot.
Perhaps the airport or firefighting crew has some that might come out, but that might wait until after the investigation.
