Dune Buggy - you don't see these much anymore.

  1. I remember those from the late 60's. They were one of the most successful kit cars that I can recall. It started with a fiberglass bucket that you dropped over a VW frame and ended with endless customization at a reasonable cost.

  2. When I left the AF in 1971 I was discharged in NY State. Bought a 1952 VW bug with natural air conditioning (big holes in the floorboards from all the salt on the roads,) drove it around 12,000 miles ziz-zagging across the USA back to my home in CA.

By the time I arrived, my $140 VW wasn't running too good anymore, so I put an ad in the local paper for $150, expecting to get maybe $75. It sold immediately for $150, as stupid me didn't know everybody wanted VWs to make dune buggies out of! (I could probably have sold it for $300, nobody cared about the body, headlights, bumpers... sigh.)
