The Pros and Cons of Carrying a 1911

For me, it' the quality of the trigger and the stopping power of modern .45 ammo.  The comments are typically diverse on this subject, and good.

  1. Again, I own different variations of the same 1911 design, and they work even if your maintenance isn't fastidious. As you say, modern ammunition is very good and if you rotate it through the magazine (shoot it) and keep newer ammo in the mag, it's even better.

Colt did very well with that handgun and with the Thompson SMG, one of which I would own if I had the money to buy one (yes, and I'd need to get the proper license). When In the Navy I would shoot Navy Thompsons with .45 ACP tracer. It's about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

  2. Pbbbfffft. I love 1911's and own two in 45ACP. I also have an HK USP in the same calibre, and that new Ruger Redhawk that does 45 Colt and 45ACP in full moon clips.
If I had to pack heat, it would be the HK. It's deadly accurate, it's a plastic gun like the Glock, and I wouldn't feel bad about the scrapes, knocks and bumps a duty gun would get. But for the BBQ or the range I go 1911 all the way. :)

    1. The CZ 75 is also a handgun I think has a chance of reaching iconic status, although it has a long way to go to catch up to the 1911.

    2. People who carry plastic firearms are degenerate infidels.

    3. There was a sale on a .45 1911 that I went to buy- but while waiting to try it out in the store, I got to handling one of those CZ75b's. It fit my hand like a glove, and that's what I ended up taking home. Haven't regretted it ever, it's more reliable than my alarm clock & more accurate than I am!

    4. I concur on the CZ75's. I have a CZ75D that does fit my hand like a glove. They're also very affordable. My 1911 is a Colt WWI manufacture that was rebarrelled and reparked in WWII. Love 'em both. Ironically, I just picked up a nice 1943 Boyt holster today for the 1911.

  3. There's a con to a 1911 ? After 7+1 is dispensed, it makes a right handy bludgeon. Besides, 2 rounds center mass should be more than adequate for most perps. As Ollie North once said : "If I get shot by a 9mm and I find out, I'll be very pissed."

  4. I have a CZ75 that came from behind the Iron Curtain. It was brought back by a service man so it has no import markings. When it was handed to me by the guy at my LGS it fit my hand like a well made glove. It feels as good as my 1911's do, if not better.

    1. Wow Jack, I just said the same thing above, before I saw your comment! We had the same experience, and it's a fine pistol!

  5. Tam has a good article on this subject -https://www.shootingillustrated.com/articles/2017/1/31/the-pros-and-cons-of-carrying-a-1911/

I'm dipping my toe into the non-1911 market myself, mainly since there are so many of them out there, I figure I ought to get used to shooting them a bit. But my 1911's just feel right to me. and like Anon. above, I have a CZ75 of the same lineage, service member bring back, and it does feel good. Was looking at one of the newer 'semi custom' CZ75's at my LGS the other day, it felt just as good if not better.

  6. The only significant downside to a 1911 is capacity. Even overlength mags are 10 rounds. Many 9mm pistols have 17 or more rounds per mag. The vast majority of defensive gun incidents end with fewer rounds fire han the 7 in a 1911. BUT...and this is not impossible.....if you are confronted by multiple two legged beasties the higher capacity mag could make the difference. As Stalin said quantity has a quality of it's own.

  7. Cocked and locked with one in the pipe using a thumb break holster.
John Moses Browining knew exactly what he was doing. The idiots in
the military decided on an anciet flap style holster. One swipe
of the thumb safety after drawing the weapon and it is hot and
    ready to go to town.

If you can hit what you aim at, even a .22 will get the job done.
That said, I have watched gangbangers bragging about being shot
by nines a half dozen times. A 240 grain SJHP will ruin a bad
guys day. There was an old story about some officer in WWI who
who emptied (7) 7-round magazines on Germans storming a trench.
All 49 were either dead or totally incapcitated. I will take
a larger cross section and more massive round every time!

Impact energy relates to greater stopping power. It is that
    simple.

  8. can not say anything bad about the 1911A1. good weapon designed to kill humans with a sense of immediacy.
also can not say anything bad about the CZ75.
that said, I use the SA XD45 as my daily carry. no thumb safety to bother with. accurate and light. just surpassed 5500 rounds thru the tube. renewed the springs just for grins. mags still function like new. no feed fails. clean and lube is the key.
bought my oldest brother an R1 for Christmas. goes well with his M1 garand. seems happy with it.
