And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Winter, California, 1872 by Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902)
My grandfather had a Bierstadt hanging in his den, now hanging in the Whitney Gallery of Western Art. I've always had a soft spot for his art since then.
His "Among the Sierra Nevada" is breathtaking - it's huge - approximately 6' x 10' - and you feel like you could walk right into it and be in the mountains.
Quick note to say how much I appreciate your posting paintings like this. It makes me much more aware of artists I am not familiar with. Thank you very much for posting this.

ReplyDeleteHis paintings displayed an amazing touch with his use of light. This particular painting not so much.
DeleteI just checked out the Whitney Gallery of Western Art. There's yet another reason to visit Cody, Wyoming.
