  2. Chalk marks have closed a lot of places around here. Nice faces on public or private land now off limits due to careless climbers.

    I never used chalk when I climbed. I was a solid 5.10, although I could manage a few 5.12 but a struggle.

    Now it seems like every noob must have a bag o chalk and use it liberally. I guess its a prop for pjoto ops.

    1. Chalk was not a problem since rain washes it away, but setting anchors bolts is a non-starter in most areas. Often better to top rope and free climb.

  4. 5.11 minimum. Was a 5.7 top-roper in NC. Watched a 5.12+ move in 1989 on The Grandfather Boulders before Hugh outlawed that. Vern was explosive. Fingernail, then OMG.
