And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Happened to me a month ago, except the distance was maybe 3 feet. We keep a small pail of bird seed just outside the kitchen door. At 2 am I heard a noise, went to the door and turned the light on. He immediately bailed.
I first got wise to this guy last year when he bent 3 Sheppard's hooks that held sunflower seed feeders. I put those away and now try to remember to bring the bird seed pail inside at night.
He's a handsome bear. Maybe 350 pounds and all black. I'm glad he's still more afraid of me than I am of him.
My father's old 401 sits in my safe and that cartridge is a beast. It had more energy at 100-yards than the 44 magnum revolver at the muzzle. It was also heavy and not terribly well balanced and compared to the Model 94, Winchester didn't build all that many of them.
Woke up one night outside the main shelter at Mt Leconte (above Gatlinburg on the Appalachian trail) with bear licking water off my chest. Then she pawed the pack I was using for a pillow from under my head . I grabbed my friend who was visiting from Rhode Island who didn't believe there were bears in the Smokies, and we scrambled around the wall into the shelter which was full of dumb day hikers who had carried their packs full of food into the shelter. The fog was so thick we couldn't see the bears until they within a few feet of the shelter. At one time we counted over a dozen at one time.We spent the night throwing rocks and keeping the fire going. at them and keeping the fire going! My friend (army buddy) would never go hiking with me again!
Yeah, you're going to want to shoot that critter outside of your cabin.

200 grain soft point at 2150 fps should be medicine for unwelcome bears.
