And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
A bristelcone plays a significant role in one of the later books of the _Daniel Black_ series (which, alas, appears to have been abandoned by the author).
Specifically, the dryad of the bristlecone. Fun fantasy series. Software engineer gets abducted to magical world, given various sorcerous powers, and hijinks ensue. Quite a bit of adult content, but not so much that it overwhelms the story IMO. Author is E. William Brown if anyone wants to give the books a try. If enough people buy 'em, maybe he'll be motivated to finish the series. Each book works fairly well on its own though.

ReplyDeleteKeith Richards planted it.
