And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I'm guessing mid to late 60's. If the body hadn't rusted away, the engines were generally good for about 80k miles. Starting in '68, I began buying cars to play with, mostly Chevy's. Bought a handful of '57 2 door sedans with I6 engines, all with 3 spd sticks, for $75 each. A ragtop '57 was $125.
Pull into a station, check the gas gauge and fill the oil. Bought gallon cans of re-refined oil. When it stopped smoking, time to dump that can into it.
Dad got annoyed about the sedan in the back yard I was stripping to set up for dragracing, and towed it away. Saw it behind his towtruck when he went past the service station I worked at after school. So, I stuffed the much breathed on BBC into that ragtop. I was a little ticked off, or I wouldn't have used that car. It would yank the front wheels off the ground shifting 2nd on the street. No one would race me at the South Philly street races, on Fri/Sat nites. Car stood out, too memorable, needed that sedan body to blend in.
For value calibration, my dad had a small used car lot I worked at in '66. Had an absolute mint '57 Chevy 2dr hardtop, v8. Took most of the summer before a father and son bought it (project car for the kid, I think.) Sold for $600.
Actually bought a nice running '56 Buick Century for 75 bucks in '69....no springs for the hood....man that sucker weighed a ton....kept a broom handle in front of the radiator so I could check the oil and water....leaky radiator, don't ya' know....
The off the picture to the right runs the gooderest.

ReplyDeleteI think there is a Falcon, behind the one that runs good
