    1. My Dad smoked Camels. R J Reynolds had a promotion, turn in cigarette packs for prizes. 500 got us a regulation pool table. The promotion was geared towards the military. Combine packs to get prizes for the barracks, but anyone could do it. It took Dad about a year to get to the 500.

  2. Many mango season ago, I was better at baseball than my brother but girls were not allowed in little league, which made me crazy. As an adult I applaud keeping girls out of a boys’ sport but I still wish I could have played.

  3. I had a Spalding, and still do, though it hasn't seen much activity in the past 40 years. Got the bat and a couple well worn balls too.

  4. When my son Nolan was approaching little league age I got two gloves. The Nolan Ryan little league fielders glove and a adult pitcher's glove. I contacted the Nolan Ryan Foundation and arranged to have the pitcher's glove signed for my son. A small donation and fee to cover shipping and my son had a collectable.

Backstory: When my wife was 6 months pregnant I was engrossed in Nolan Ryan's last perfect game. My wife was insistent on picking out a boy's name. I quickly responded Nolan Ryan. She liked it and left me to watch the rest of the game. The perfect game made the front page of the next days newspaper. I caught hell for a few days. We kept the Nolan but dropped the Ryan for my mother's maiden name Walker. And when was a toddler he had a Texas Ranger's tee shirt with Nolan Ryan's number on it.

    1. Number 7 next closest had 3. Rickey Henderson set the stolen base record that same night but I was very happy the Express overshadowed his pompous arrogant ass.

  5. Ryan never threw a perfect game.
He had 7 no hitters, but no perfect game.

    1. You're right. From wiki:

Ryan is the all-time leader in no-hitters with seven, three more than any other pitcher. He is tied with Bob Feller for the most one-hitters, with 12. Ryan also pitched 18 two-hitters. Despite this, he never pitched a perfect game, nor did he ever win a Cy Young Award. Ryan is one of only 29 players in baseball history to have appeared in Major League baseball games in four different decades.

  7. Mickey Mantle, a New York Yankee, in an ad for Phillies cigars! Don't you wonder if Yankees' fans who saw that ad had themselves a good cringe, while Philadelphia Phillies' fans enjoyed something of a chuckle?

  8. Played highschool ball for the Commerce Comets in my home state. They say he hung a tire in a tree, tied it to the ground and braced it with a third line to the tree with a chalk x on the tire in the strike zone and swung at it hundreds an hundreds of times. Guess that's where he got those popeye forearms. Said he would have taken better care of himself and not drank so much if he knew he would live that long. Lots of early deaths in the family due to heart disease.
