  3. There were reasons the old airmen called their machines "kites". Big (sometimes), draggy, relatively light, relatively fragile, fairly under-powered.
    I know nothing about that particular design, but here's one of my favorite airplanes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Dragon_Rapide. It came along only 8 years later but quite a number were made and some are still flying. I've read that they are kites, too. I just like it because it's charmingly odd, and stylish.
