That door must weigh a ton

  1. Suicide doors. I think they latch to the chrome part on the side of the driver seat. Still massive doors.

    1. Yep. I thought I read somewhere the rear fenders on the 59 2 door were around 14' long. Luv em or hate em, cars in the 50's had style!

  2. Interestingly, they had seatbelts. An "optional item" at the time that most considered a nuisance.

  4. The first car my family had that came with sat belts was a 1963 Oldsmobile. My dad picked it up at the factory then picked up the rest of us at my mom's family's place in Pennsylvania.
We drove back to the west coast being tourists and us having to wear a seatbelt for the first time. I remember my dad saying "put it on and keep it on"!

    1. My first 'new" car was a 1962 Ford Galaxie Sunliner. It did not come with seatbelts and the salesman never even offered them as an option. After about a year I bought 2 from the local Pep Boys for the front bench seat.

    2. Our first car with seatbelts was my mom's 1964 Pontiac.
My dad also told us to buckle up.

When I started driving, I rebelled and didn't wear a seatbelt.
Later, I realized that I could make sharper turns if I used a seatbelt rather than having to hang on to keep from sliding in my seat.

So, in effect, I first started wearing seatbelts again in order to drive even more recklessly than I could without them.

      Kids...

  5. If you're thinking there's only one door you're mistaken. The rear door, shown in the picuture, is a suicide door (hinged at rear). The front door, not shown, is hinged at the cowl (hinged at front).
