And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I'll never forget driving into a residential area of Orlando (mid 80's) and getting behind an early-70's Caddy Coupe de Ville with green tinted windows going about 5 mph. No driver visible except the top 1/4 or so of a silverish permanent wave. And a little old lady's arm sticking out the window with a very pudgy fully-coiffed Pomeranian at the end of a leash, trotting alongside the idling car with tongue lolling. Made my whole day.
Did that coming down Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga in my '54 Ford Fordomatic. Good thing nothing was coming when I ran that red light at the base of the mountain.
I miss my bus. San Diego to San Francisco about 40 times on the 5 and the 1. Simpler and easier times. Even when the battery wasn't playing fair I could bump start it by dabbing my foot on the ground just outside the grapevine and everything I owned fit in it or on top of it.
That brings back good memories! I toured the south part of Western Australia in one of those VW camper vans, mine had the steering on the right & the door on the left side. Great car! Cracked the block somehow on the motor, my mechanic fixed it with epoxy. Yeah, and it worked! Far as I know it's still going!

ReplyDeleteMy first car was exactly that vehicle: 1970 VW Westphalia camper. 57 hp. Last year of drum front brakes. Got total brake fade on two occasions.
