Soldiers struggle to pull a huge piece of artillery through the WWI mud, c.1918.

 Now we use tractors.

  1. Pulling it along train tracks so it won't sink out of sight in the mud. Likely the horses were all dead by this time in the war and men became the draft animals.

  4. Trenching along side the road to help it drain to keep it firm is a nice touch. Of course putting men in the trench to help pull means the muck they're in is far worse than the gun. Men are cheap, guns are expensive.
