And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I read that this project was the origination of hardhats....workers took two base ball caps stacked on top of one anther with the bills going in opposite directions, and coated them with pitch.....once they hardened they were adequate protection from falling nails and small hand tools....like I told my Navy inspector one time, the hardhat wouldn't do much if I got hit by the landing gear that fell off of an F-14, or a landing A4....we eventually got out of wearing them because of the "stow your cover" signs by the door of every hanger....it's been several years now, so I don't know if they still have them or not....
They still sell bump caps today. Great for working in machinery spaces where things are tight and everything is made from steel. Just a close fitting, well-padded cap with a very short visor. You'd be amazed how easy it is to bump your head below decks (engine rooms and so on) with a hard hat on. The damn visor blocks all upward peripheral vision, and the hat makes you about 3" taller. You hit everything and immediately feel like a complete dumbass.
We used to BUILD things in this country!

The Bridge designer had those safety nets installed to cut down on construction worker deaths. Back in the 30s that was innovative.
