Pictures released by the Navy today show the USS Harry S. Truman sailing alongside USS Gerald R. Ford.

The Ford class has just three aircraft elevators instead of four, but their placement and larger size are supposed to actually enhance operations, not hinder them. The Navy also says that the larger flight deck area will help the ship achieve its goal of being able to execute 25 percent more sorties per day than its predecessor, an aspiration that is still far from being realized at this time.

  1. Now, that is one bundle of kill ya' dead right there. And, um, it's Harry S Truman. His middle name was simply S with no period. I know, grammar nazi, but I am a profession writer. It's in my 'hood.

  2. "'Better' is the enemy of 'good enough'"
The Nimitz-class was far more than "good enough"

  3. I recall that Truman had grandfathers that both had names that began with "S". So his middle name is simply the letter to appeal to/placate both.

  4. Great photos. My nephew is currently a green shirt on the Harry S Truman.

  5. The Ford has had some growing pains. I don't know if the ship's plumbing problems have been resolved, let along the problems with the catapult, etc. I suspect that this will be the last generation of big deck aircraft carriers. However, I'll be dead before they are, so let me know what happens when I'm on the other side.

  6. Is it my imagination or are there only three arresting wires on the Ford? I clearly see the classic four on the Harry S Truman.

  7. Thank you for posting that.

I did a quick Internet search to successfully download the highest resolution of two of those photographs, plus I downloaded a French high resolution photograph of the two aircraft carriers which was even better.

Naturally, I'll share them on my FLICKR account, which is public.

  8. And all they really are is huge Targets for the flood of Anti Ship and IBM Missiles that will come their way in a real shooting war. Either that or they will make for some excellent Harbor Patrol Ships.
All I know is that the Navy really needs to put on its serious thinking cap. So that they can get away from Basically WWII Technology and weapon systems. That and get going with setting up a reasonable ship deployment system. The Fleet is getting is getting mighty tired.
