And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My granddad, who we called "Pappy," had one of those. I thought it was the coolest car ever! That "cockpit-style instrument panel" made me think I was in an airplane.
Pappy didn't treat it well though- he owned a feed store & carried big sacks of animal feed in the trunk, finally broke the rear springs. I could have cried! He just kept driving it, and (without the sacks of grain) it took off like a rocket, even with broken springs! You sure felt the bumps in the road, though.
High school days, late 1950's, was a passenger in a supercharged Studebaker. To this day might be the fastest I've been in a passenger car. That 180 mph speedometer was pegged!

ReplyDeleteMy Mom drove one of those in the 50's. It was a deep burgundy and white.
ReplyDeleteActually that speedo read to 160, not 180, But 160 mph on 175 hp is more than hard to believe.
ReplyDeleteWhatever the speed, it was on 1950 era tires.
DeleteI bought one of these...my first car, when in High School in 1964. Paid $50, had a half a tank of gas when purchased.
