B-47 Is that something falling off the wing??

  1. Wasn't there a bomber release maneuver intended to increase the survivability of the aircraft that involved a "pitch and toss" release to increase the time the bomber had to get out of the area before detention?

    1. Yep. The B-47 could perform it. So could the F-84G, the first single-seat plane capable of carrying and tossing a nuke.

Principle is simple. Fly to target, go into an upwards loop, let bomb go (the toss part) and use the backside of the loop to rotate and get away. Very useful. Worked with both conventional and nuclear bombs.

My dad, an F-84G pilot, really liked practicing that maneuver.

    2. I have a diploma from a school my Dad went to at NAS Oceana to learn how to do the lob toss.

  3. I actually taught such a lob delivery maneuver at F-4 RTU back in 79-82. Not the most accurate but sufficient for an air burst.

  6. Bomb lob. My Dad worked on B47s in the late 1950s. McConnell AFB in Wichita has a B47 on display just inside the fence.
