And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I had lunch with a buddy who flew OPFOR against F-14's. He flew F-15's. We discussed the merits of different aircraft. He said the F-16's would eat the F-15's lunch in a dogfight. The F-14's were likewise no match for an F-15 in a dogfight.
Defending the navy, I mentioned that the F-14 was designed to engage its opponents at 60 miles with Phoenix missiles, not to dogfight.
The F-14 was a missile platform. The F-15 was designed for air to ground attack. The F-16 was intended as a pure dogfighter. The F-18 is a compromise between fighter and ground attack. For all 4 the skill of the pilot was a major factor in how well it performs outside its intended role.

Would have done better if it had a good engine rather than that TF-30 PoS.
ReplyDeleteThey had to fly the engine, not the airplane, I have heard. Bur looked great in Top Gun!
