Coming on up

  1. I had lunch with a buddy who flew OPFOR against F-14's. He flew F-15's. We discussed the merits of different aircraft. He said the F-16's would eat the F-15's lunch in a dogfight. The F-14's were likewise no match for an F-15 in a dogfight.

Defending the navy, I mentioned that the F-14 was designed to engage its opponents at 60 miles with Phoenix missiles, not to dogfight.

  2. Would have done better if it had a good engine rather than that TF-30 PoS.

    1. They had to fly the engine, not the airplane, I have heard. Bur looked great in Top Gun!

  3. The F-14 was a missile platform. The F-15 was designed for air to ground attack. The F-16 was intended as a pure dogfighter. The F-18 is a compromise between fighter and ground attack. For all 4 the skill of the pilot was a major factor in how well it performs outside its intended role.
