  2. They appear to be in tow or else right up to the transom of a watercraft. That flag and the marked horizontal bar is odd otherwise, also the engine is at idle for the shutter to be able to freeze the prop as seen.

  3. The battle ship would stream a "matt" on a line behind the ship. The scout would land, taxi onto the matt and be "hooked". It would then be dragged along whatever side of the ship that had an empty "cat". Hooked up to the ships lifting crane and hoisted into the "cradle" on the "cat". They are waiting for the hookers to come onboard to attach the lifting hook. Everything to service the aircraft would be done once back on the ship.
