Sgt. Andrea Benson said a mountain lion entered the home in the 16000 block of Oakhaven Lane at about 9:30 p.m.
When the family and mountain lion spotted each other, both ran. The family ran downstairs and the mountain lion ran into a bathroom, Benson said.
The family called 911 and the Sheriff’s Office and California Department Fish and Wildlife responded to the scene.
The deputies and warden set up a ladder, and with the homeowner’s permission broke the window to the second story bathroom, Benson said. They pounded on the wall and shone a flashlight at the open window to coax the mountain lion out.
Their advice, should you come across a big cat in the bathroom?
The Sheriff’s Office said anyone who encounters a mountain lion should make noise, act defiant and not afraid, maintain eye contact, never run away, slowly create distance and fight back if you’re attacked.
Naw, just lure it outside with a series of bowls of milk, leading to the door. Cats, even big ones, can't resist.
Seriously, heard once of someone up in Sonora who had a goat pen with tall fences. They began noticing one less goat every couple of days, but no body. Turns out a lion was leaping over the fence at night, killing a goat, then jumping back out with the body, eating it later in the manzanita.
It's like living in the Kalahari up there sometimes.
Edit: looked up the address - it's off Phoenix Lake Road, Near Big Hill. Definitely good country for lions!

We get bobcats in the front yard.
ReplyDeleteFor big cats, you really need a BIG cardboard box.
ReplyDeleteCats LOVE boxes.
Okay I was going to ask which kitty litter is recommended by the family, but I'm guessing they have that squared away by now.
DeleteMust have been scary at the time, but now, they have an awesome story to tell others (sweartaGod - he was standing RIGHT THERE!!).
Don't act afraid, don't run away, just draw and fire. Nice floor trophy or new coat.
