And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Mrs. CW found this at an antiques fair down in Lodi, and brought it home to me.
I've been cleaning it up and sharpening it all afternoon. It's about ready to shave.
Ah, you touch the very heart of the matter. Why anything? Why play golf when easier and less expensive ways exist to entertain yourself? I started down this road when I wondered to myself about shaving with a straight razor. Seemed super risky, yet millions at one time did it all the time. I decided to see if I could teach myself to do that. That opened the door. Found out quality old straight razors were pretty cheap. As with pretty much anything, there's a much more complicated world for every little thing. Once I got semi proficient with the straight, the challenge became whether I could get the razor shaving sharp. Education and practice ensued. Then, what about double edge safety razors? Were they better? Experimentation happened. All super entertaining. So, in the end, it's the challenge. It's the fun of learning something new. It's the exposure to all the little companies that cater to the wet shaving world, and all the little artisans who make or maintain our little gadgets. Could be anything. Next year could be something completely different. One year I taught myself how to read Norse runes. Useless knowledge, perhaps, but another fun and rewarding journey.
How many times a day do you shave, CW?
ReplyDelete50. No, once every two days. A quality shave lasts that long.
DeleteBut why? So much work involved. Good razors like Gillette etc., are reasonable priced - last a long time.
