As polar vortex tightens its grip on midwestern US, AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures plummet to -75 F

The coldest weather in years will put millions of people and animals throughout the midwestern United States at risk for hypothermia and frostbite to occur in minutes during the final days of January.
The deep freeze has commenced across the Upper Midwest with an AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature of 75 degrees below zero Fahrenheit reported at Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Tuesday morning.

The worst is yet to come for other parts of the Midwest as the polar vortex gets displaced from the Arctic Circle and dives into the region.
"Some locations in the Midwest will be below zero continuously for 48-72 hours," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll.

The harshest conditions are anticipated from North Dakota to northern Illinois, where there can be a prolonged stretch of dangerously low AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures that can cause frostbite in mere minutes.
On Wednesday, highs will stop well short of rising above 10 below zero from Fargo, North Dakota, to Minneapolis and Chicago. Highs in the single digits will have those from Kansas City, Missouri, to St. Louis to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pittsburgh shivering.
Wednesday night can be just as cold, if not colder, than Tuesday night in many areas.
Temperatures in Chicago can drop to 22 below zero for the first time since the mid-1980s.

  1. Unless those in the impacted states start paying the global warming tax, it will only get worse. Maybe a tax on California as well (another buck a gallon for gasoline) just to help those in the impacted region?

    1. A real winter, as I found out during my 13 year vacation in the upper midwest, is a regularly scheduled natural disaster that will kill you if you are not prepared.

  3. It was colder in Atlanta than in Portsmouth New Hampshire this morning. That can happen in the winter.

  4. Currently -22, here in Baraboo, WI. I have seen -50, in the early 1990's, so I am not complaining, but I am staying indoors!

  5. It got to -36 last night here in the wilds of Central East South Dakota. Froze my tukkas off... My dog would not go out to pee the ground was so cold. I had to put kitty litter down that I use to scatter over the porch for traction for her to squat on.

  7. I lived north of Steamboat Springs, CO for years, about 10 miles south of the WY border at 8600' On clear winter nights, 25-35 below was normal. Throw in about 30' of snow over the course of winter, usually leaving you with about 8-10' on the ground when spring rolled around and then talk to me about tough winters.

    1. growing up in montana, it was normal to have cold in winter. we considered abnormal to have a high of -40F for two weeks running. just have to make sure the stock tanks are plugged in and plenty of feed. life goes on and keep the wood coming.
city folks won't know what to do if they get cold, poor bastards. I suppose that they would put on an extra set of underwear or some thing stupider. too much like work to get out there and do some physical work to warm themselves. just read about a guy who passed out shoveling snow and froze to death. city folks...
