Hackers stole a casino's high-roller database through a thermometer in the lobby fish tank

Unbelievable, but the Internet of Things can be a curse as well as a blessing.

Hackers are increasingly targeting "internet of things" devices to access corporate systems, using things like CCTV cameras or air-conditioning units, according to the CEO of a cybersecurity firm.
The internet of things refers to devices hooked up to the internet, and it has expanded to include everything from household appliances to widgets in power plants.
Nicole Eagan, the CEO of Darktrace, told the WSJ CEO Council Conference in London on Thursday: "There's a lot of internet-of-things devices, everything from thermostats, refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, to people who bring in their Alexa devices into the offices. There's just a lot of IoT. It expands the attack surface, and most of this isn't covered by traditional defenses."
"The attackers used the connected thermometer to get a foothold in the network," she said. "They then found the high-roller database and then pulled that back across the network, out the thermostat, and up to the cloud."

  1. Hell, I still have a flip phone. I can go back to using lanterns and peeing in the bushes if necessary. I would miss the internet but I lived 2/3 of my life without one so I'd manage! I do worry about all the banking stuff being at risk. May go back to using a coffee can or a cookie jar!

  2. I've entered a secure government network through the printers...it was in a NATO country circa 2003 as a demonstration of how I could get 'root' in their network in under five minutes. It worked, they were embarrassed. I have no idea what they did to fix it. I'm sure that their fix was "secret".

  5. It's discouraging to see how many "Alexa" and "Echo" devices are being sold now, and how many "smart" TVs also listen to every word spoken.

Orwell was a prophet in many ways, but even he never foresaw that people would buy their own "telescreens" so that Big Brother can keep an eye on them more easily!

  6. There are several distinct styles of online clubhouse spaces. As of late the more mainstream online gambling club opening has been those in view of DC Comics. voodoodreams
