And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
This may be the best book I have ever read. The research is obviously exhaustive, and was compiled using a lot of information gleaned from the Japanese tactics and strategy from that time. Many previously held assumptions about the battle are washed away by the truths revealed by actual accounts from survivors and the Japanese records. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know ever since reading it about a year ago.
