Hungarian language and its two closest relatives: Khanty and Mansi
The info I received 50yrs ago in my UT Linguistics course, was that Hungarian was closely related to Finnish and Turkish and not part of the Proto-Indo-European family of languages at all…
Hungarian (Magyar) is an Uralic language, as is Finnish. Turkic is not a related language, although there are some loan words due to, shall we say, forced proximity in the past.
Supposedly one of the most difficult languages to learn.
ReplyDeletesomebodies apparently used to do some traveling.
ReplyDeleteIf you are ever in Budapest be sure not to miss Heroes Square, and the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars statue.
DeleteKhanti, Mansi, but not Hungsi? Magsi?
ReplyDeleteAlso; Suomi.
ReplyDeleteYes. I believe its a bit more distantly related to Suomi/Finnish.
DeleteOne of the nicest guys i ever met is from Hungry, lived with the sweetest Hungarian girl for 18 years.
ReplyDeleteI tried to get my father to teach me Hungarian he said, why this is the United States we speak English here.
