And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I will never, ever like Hemingway or read his works. He was a communist. He was a huge admirer of Castro. He lived in Cuba at the time Castro took over and stayed there for some time afterward. He and Che Guevara were good friends and Hemingway was often a guest at the firing squad massacres Che presided over.
Che was known for bragging about personally killing some 3,000 prisoners, all guilty of not being communists and including both women and children. In the book by Humberto Fontova, "Hemingway would watch the massacres from a picnic chair while sipping Daiquiris.’ ” While watching hundreds of political prisoners murdered.
