And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
i grew up there and remember it very well. the last original casino on the strip, the Tropicana is due to be demolished this year. it ain't what it use to be. the classiness of going to the casino's is long gone. until the early 80's a person was not allowed in the gaming floors unless they had a shirt with a collar, long pants and closed toe shoes. the floor managers would politely ask people to come back dressed and would sometimes give them comp tickets for something so that they would return. it's now turned into a corporate Disney Land with a bad attitude. it's truly sad what that town has become. when they ran the mob out, that town went to sh*t fast. it went from a Monte Carlo to an Anaheim in just a few short years.
That sign needs saving, a real dandy it is, its truly indicative of that era's style of commercial art, one day it'll be highly sought after with little of it to be had, guess such an iconic sign deserves that honor if nothing else.
mafia as iconic art? who knew? guess even Italian gangsters got style. be a shame if it is destroyed. be nothing to store it in the boneyard like a military aircraft.
Remember reading in the trades (Signs of the Times I think) when Young had their biggest disaster. The president was looking out the window of his office when he saw strongest winds Vegas had ever had approaching. He said he knew they were in big trouble. The wind took down what I think was the biggest sign in Vegas (The Hilton) at the time. The footing alone was nine stories deep and had elevators in the support structure to maintain the electronics and neon of the main sign faces. A lot of sign engineering and codes across the country changed after this disaster. Bubbarust

YESCO... Young Electric Sign Company... they made all of the neon landmarks.
ReplyDeleteYoung Electric Sign. Official light bulb changer for a Vegas.

ReplyDeleteI grew up there too. Funny how neon signs always gave me a feeling of “home.” Now unrecognizable, except for Sunrise Mountain.
