And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Bald Eagle in the back yard this evening
Noble Beastie
The little birds didn't like the big boy being in the neighborhood.
Elmer Keith wrote about bald eagles swooping down on mountain sheep herds in Montana and grabbing lambs and dropping them onto the rocks below, then feasting on the dead carcasses. He said the eagles decimated flocks of new born lambs. But that’s what they do...majestic? yes....killers....yes.... to survive and feed their young and protect their own.....yes....our National bird.....think about that. America....
I gotta give the Turkey Vultures credit. They can soar effortlessly on the slightest updraft, barely ever needing to flap their wings. It's amazing to watch (I can see them from where I work - it's distracting once you notice how really good they are at it).
'Dynamic Soaring'. Buzzards are truly amazing creatures. I've been a fan ever since a rescue dog of mine used to chase them in retaliation for them tying to eat him when he was half dead. I've watched buzzards though a spotting scope at the ranch while they clean up carcasses. Most people don't realize the tremendous service they provide.
BTW, that little dog was the greatest I'll ever partner with. He was the all-time best.
One flew over me while I was on my annual autumn visit to the Mohawk Trail in Massachusetts last year. Could very well be one of the top twenty memorable moments in my life.
Bald Eagles have made an amazing return in Tulsa and in the surrounding areas. Have seen as many as 15 in a single tree on a buggy ride along the Arkansas River along the OK & KS border. Watching them fish is a site to behold.

ReplyDeleteAnd then there are Turkey Vultures, who feed their young by regurgitating into their chicks' tiny little mouths.

The magpies, crows, and mockingbirds are always upset by eagles.
ReplyDeleteBoth actually, and metaphorically.
You forgot the common and very loud obnoxious black grackles.
DeleteBirds are simply amazing
