And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Actually, the best argument I ever had with a (to the left of center) coworker about this issue was not when we were discussing the phrase, " . . . shall not be infringed", . . . but when I kept repeating the words, " . . . and bear arms".
See, his response was that at least, it should be somewhat governed (similar to a driver's license, etc.). He wouldn't be persuaded otherwise, . . . but, when confronted with the sentence, "and bear arms", . . . the look on his face was priceless. I kept saying it over and over again, . . . he couldn't handle it.
Really, there's not much in the lower 48 that can't be dealt with quite handily still by that trio. Remove brown bear, maybe moose, and I'd be perfectly happy with that collection if I had to be a minimalist.
