And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Impressive as it was these guns were actually a liability as crew could not be on deck (to man AA guns) as the concussion from these guns when fired, would kill them.
They actually were, just once, at the battle off Samar. But you are right Yamamoto did not want either the Yamato or her sister ship, the Musashi. The Imperial Japanese Navy finally got the message and the 3rd Yamato-class hull was converted into the mega carrier, Shinano, which was torpedoed and sunk in Japanese home waters.
Impressive. I wonder if there's a Lego set available of that 18-incherer gun turret.

ReplyDeleteI believe those guns were never fired in combat. Yamamoto wanted carriers. He got another battleship.
