Hop pickers on stilts in Faversham England 1920. -- Low tech, but it was cheap and it worked

  2. When I was 13 I got really good at walking on stilts. However, mine were never that tall. The problem with really tall stilts is that if you trip, it's a loooong way down.

  3. About a century ago the poorer parts of London would empty as whole families descended on Kent for the hop picking holidays. This article may be of interest.

  4. In the Caribbean around Carnival time (just prior to the start of Lent), one fo the costumed characters frequently seen are the Moko Jumbies. Even little kids take this on, it's pretty amazing to see their skill. It appears the best way to stay up is to keep your feet moving. You'll see them resting by sitting down on the roofs of 1 story buildings with flat roofs.

  5. Hop harvesting season just started in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Six weeks, 24/7 until they are all in.
