Mass in Motion

  1. The paper mill I used to work at had had a groundwood mill years earlier that was driven by a pair of motors that size.

When the groundwood mill was shut down, the motors were left running, to balance the electrical load across the rest of the mill. Each motor was in a separate "room" with the drive shaft sliced off.

It was years before they installed a bunch of capacitor banks that allowed them to shut the motors down.

  3. Cut drive power and it would take a week to coast down.
