As an automotive journalist, I came within minutes of doing exactly that, in Australia, on Fraser Island, with a brand-new press Range Rover. I'd parked it amid the incoming tide for photos. I was on assignment for Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Fortunately, Land Rover Australia had sent a minder with me, an Ozzie driver infinitely more experienced than I was, and as the water began to lap around the tires, he politely told me to get the car out of there immediately. Had I not, that would have been me in that photo. I had no idea how quickly hard sand turns into porridge once the water hits it. Not the stupidest thing I've ever done, but close.
