    1. Testing. Not much info on the testing though.

    2. If you want to read about how great #44 was or how bad #45 is, today's journalists will write enough to either put you to sleep or make you nauseous. Articles about science and industry will get you three sentences.

    3. Most folks, even (or especially, perhaps) the ones that go around screaming "but, Science!", are really all about emotion. Anger and hysteria, and a complete absence of rational thought. Devolution. I'm afraid some serious biblical level shit is gonna have to seriously cleanse the gene pool some time real soon.

  3. Gotta love those safety shoes, um, safety sneakers. I've seen pics where guys have their shoes catch fire standing on lava flows.

    1. Happened to me in a steel mill. Didn't know I was on fire until I was flying through the air backwards, jerked by a damn good co-worker, and sprayed by a water hose.

    2. I think they can test the amounts/types of gases coming-up with the lava.
If those gases change(against a certain 'norm'.....they may know that an explosive event is in the works.

  4. Magma mineralogy changes through out its life within the chamber as partial fractionation occurs. Guessing that they are pulling samples for mineralogy profiling, x-ray diffraction, etc. to understand changes in the petro-chemistry. Helps them understand what's going on in the magma chamber and maybe informs on workings of the mantle too. One of the few places on earth that has civilized infrastructure and steady funding where they can study volcanos, live eruptions, mantle hot spots, and plate tectonics in uninterrupted peace.
