And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Wasn't it implied that he broke/spilled a roll or two of Mercury dimes inside the capsule? I seem to remember that it was the unofficial cause of the hatch jettisoning early, causing the capsule to take on water and sink. It's a good legend anyway.
They actually recovered that capsule. Last I heard it was at the Cosmodrome in Kansas undergoing restoration. Never found the hatch though. I always wondered about the dimes myslef....and the little toy space capsules.
Ya know, they never lost faith in him though. He flew during the Gemini program and was killed during a mishap on the pad during the Apollo program.
Liberty Bell 7 IS at the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson KS. They restored it after its recovery in 1999 and it went on tour around the US. I saw it at the St. Louis Science Center & it looked too be in great shape despite 38 years underwater.
They did find mercury dimes inside the capsule, but those weren't the cause of the hatch blowing off.
NASA believed in Gus. They gave him command of the first manned Gemini mission, and the first Apollo
Poor Gus!
