And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
They even flew in a whorehouse (Mama Dai's) fully staffed so that the soldiers would have some relief and they were captured and taken over by the NVA.
lL, I'm not trying to be picky, but There was no North or South Vietnam when the photo was taken. The NVA didn't exist in the early 1952s. It was Quân đội Quốc gia Việt Nam, or VNA "National Army of Vietnam",
Bernard Fall was accompanying my battalion when was he was killed. In addition to his Marine escort, a Marine from my platoon was also killed by the land mine. The Marine from my platoon was our first KIA. As I recall, the basic story on Bernard Fall was that he was on sabbatical from Howard University in Washington, D.C. His choice of area for research was Italy or a return to Vietnam. He chose the area in Vietnam where he’d served in the 1950’s as a soldier in the French Army. The area he was killed in, “The Street Without Joy - La Rue Sans Joie”, was also the name of a book he wrote about his experiences there as a soldier.
It didn't end well for the French.
