Anyone know what kind of bird this is? On the back fence in Redding, Ca. There's two of them and I'm pretty sure they have a nest somewhere.

  1. Looks like a species of Towhee. Do they spend alot of time rummaging about on the ground in leaf and pine litter?

    1. Yes they do. Thanks to you and Anon below for the ID. I've never seen one this color before, and they don't seem to be all that afraid of me. They let me get surprisingly close before flying off.

    2. They are decoying you away from the nest.

    3. I have some canyon towhees and “surprisingly close” is an understatement. More like almost domesticated. One comes inside sometimes.

  3. As my father used to call them, that's an LBJ.
