And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

If you're looking for a pet, perhaps a dog would work better
Hippos are deadly, and no you wouldn't want your kids that close.
According to the BBC, "Ungainly as it is, the hippopotamus is the world's deadliest large land mammal, killing an estimated 500 people per year in Africa. Hippos are aggressive creatures, and they have very sharp teeth. And you would not want to get stuck under one; at up to 2,750kg they can crush a human to death."

Is a "giant" hippo bigger than an ordinary hippo? And is climate change the cause of that gigantism?
