And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

This makes me nostalgic - it's like an old friend. I'm nuts!
Back in the 60's I bought a 64 Mustang with a 4-on-the-floor Hurst shifter. The girl I was seeing said it was a phallic symbol for the immature. I asked her how I could break free from my power-shift lust. She said: "Let me drive and I'll turn that cold, inert metallic object into a warm Howard Johnsons". See growing up quick isn't that difficult.
I loved driving in Europe with four-on-the-floor, but here in SoCal an automatic is necessary. Even then it's a drag driving on our overloaded freeways!
A manual transmission most certainly does NOT distract from the road and especially does not remove the driver's eyes from the road. It is all, surprisingly, done without having to look at it-believe it or not.
I started with one of those, but now I have a 6 speed with a dogleg reverse.
I learned to drive one of those in a Chevy C20.
ReplyDeleteI remember it fondly.
No buddy you're not. The pure joy of hanging through all 4 gears.
ReplyDeleteBanging!

ReplyDeleteI had a much easier time with one of these than I did with the '63 Ford Econoline with three on the tree for some reason.
ReplyDeleteThat's the Millennial Anti-Theft Device!

Who would miss that clutch and stick mess which distracted from eyes on the road?

Drop by my place sometime. I own several of them. I'll also square you away on politics.
ReplyDeleteLater, we'll do a little shooting. Bring your own or use some of mine.
